Further support for Iranian temporary residents
The new measures for Iranians, who want to extend their temporary status in Canada take effect on March 1, 2023.
Canada has expressed concerns over human rights violations in Iran and has advocated for the protection of the human rights of Iranian citizens.
The new measures will make it easier for Iranians to extend their temporary status in Canada, allowing Iranians to continue working, studying, or visiting family by applying for a new permit from inside Canada. An open work permit will be made available for Iranians already in Canada as well. Applications from Iranians in Canada will also be processed on a priority order.
Moreover, the Government of Canada canceled definite processing fees for Iranians who wish to extend their stay in Canada and will also waive passport and permanent resident travel document fees for citizens and permanent residents of Canada in Iran who wish to leave the country.
Canada has been committed to protecting human rights and promoting peace and security around the world, including in Iran and continues to explore changes to other programs which are dedicated, permanent immigration programs for those who protect and promote human rights.
We will remind, earlier, the Canadian government has imposed sanctions on Iranian officials and entities for their involvement in human rights
abuses and has supported international efforts to address human rights concerns in Iran.
Canada has a long-standing history of supporting the Iranian people, including those who have come to Canada as immigrants, refugees, or temporary residents. The Canadian government has provided humanitarian aid and support to Iran, including during natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods.
